Questions & Answers

  1. How does laser hair removal work?

The lasers used for laser hair removal are aimed at the selected area of the skin then absorbed by melanin which is the dark pigment within the hair. The pigment is heated and the hair follicle is disabled without damaging the surrounding tissue. The treated hair will slowly start to fall out, roots that have been disabled in that session will not produce another hair. The surrounding skin is unharmed.

A patented Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD) technology is used to protect the superficial layers of the skin with a cool burst of cryogen before the laser energy penetrates the skin. Alternatively air-cooling system is used to cool the skin and provide maximum comfort with minimal side effects.

  2. How is the treatment carried out?

Prior to Laser Treatment you will be offered a FREE initial consultation. A medical history will be taken to confirm you as suitable for Laser Hair Removal treatment. Our Laser Practitioner will also advise you on all aspects of the procedure, and presents an ideal opportunity for you to ask any questions.

Before treatment you will be asked for your informed consent to the procedure, you will sign a consent form. And a small test patch will be done before you firs treatment session. We use the Candela GentleMax Pro system which employs both the Alexandrite and Nd:Yag lasers. Alexandrite laser is the swiftest for hair removal. It is also the most effective on Clients with lighter-to-olive-coloured skin. The 'Nd:Yag' laser is a little slower but very effective for all Clients (including those with very tanned or dark skin).

Immediately before treatment your will be shaved. The laser setting will be adjusted according to your hair colour and thickness, your skin tone, and the area where your unwanted hair is.

You will wear protective eye-ware to shield your eyes from the laser light. The hand piece will be placed on the surface of your skin and a short pulse of light will be released. The light pulse can target many hair follicles at the same time. The process then moves on to a neighbouring area until the complete area of skin has been treated. Treatment may take from as little as 10 minutes to as much as an hour. The duration depends on the size of the area to be treated. Depending on your personal treatment plan your skin will be protected with either the patented Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD) technology (this protects the superficial layers of the skin with a cool burst of cryogen before the laser energy penetrates the skin), or using air-cooling to cool the skin and provide maximum comfort with minimal side effects.

  3. How long does Laser Hair Removal last, and is it permanent?

Although there are many methods to remove unwanted hair, you should be aware that no method is truly permanent. Laser hair removal is, however, the most effective treatment available.

Laser hair removal is, indeed, the only clinically proven treatment for the removal of unwanted facial and body hair in a gentle, speedy and effective way which delivers long-lasting results. Most people see in excess of 60-95% less hair growth after a full course and the hair left is much finer and lighter in colour.

Hair that is removed during a laser hair removal treatment is dead and will never grow back. You should not forget, however, that your body carries more hair than you probably imagine. Why? Hair grows in cycles, so you never see all your hair at any one time….and for this reason it takes multiple sessions to remove the unwanted hair.

  4. Can you treat Asian skin, Afro Caribbean skin, dark skin?

We use the specialist Candela GentleMax Pro laser equipment specifically designed to safely and effectively reduce unwanted hair growth for all skin tones.

Asian and Black skin can be particularly at risk of side-effects if treated with IPL or the wrong type of laser for these skin types. That is why Aurora Laser Clinic use the Nd:YAG to treat dark skin types, which is the safest laser to treat them, and Alexandrite for light skin types which gives the best results.

  5. Do men have Laser Hair Removal?

Yes they do. It is a popular procedure. Men tend to favour treatment on their back, their shoulders, their chest, their neck and around the edges of their beard.

  6. Am I suitable for treatment?

The purpose of your initial, consultation is to ensure there are NO factors which preclude you from being suitable for laser Hair Removal treatment. You will be taken through a series of easy-to-understand questions. In most cases these will confirm your suitability for laser treatment. Where a response indicates further investigation or care is required you will be asked to consult your Doctor for further advice.

The results from the consultation and the test patch will be used to draw up your own personal treatment plan.

All skin types can be treated with our most advanced laser delivery system. However, the perfect candidate has dark hair and light skin. Dark skin with dark hair can also be treated using the Nd:YAG. White hair and light blond hair respond poorly to laser therapy.

  7. How does the treatment feel?

You have no need to worry. Our laser hair removal is virtually pain-free. Indeed Laser Hair Removal treatments are significantly more comfortable than other hair removal solution such as waxing, tweezing or electrolysis.

You may experience a small but manageable sensation that we describe as a mild stinging or being flicked by a rubber band, when we pulse the laser. Most of our former waxing, stringing and electrolysis Clients report that the discomfort is far less than those methods of hair removal. Cold air or cryogen (cool spray) is used during the procedure to cool and numb the skin, removing the need for any anaesthetic (though this can be used if required).

Stress, fatigue, caffeine, your menstrual cycle and pain tolerance may also influence the level of comfort ( or discomfort) that you feel.

  8. How many treatments are necessary?

Treatments may vary depending on your specific needs. Hair growth is reduced after each treatment and the number of treatments required will be based on your hair colour and type, the body area being treated, and your skin tone.

Since only hair that is actively growing can be treated by the laser, and different hairs will be at different pints in their growth cycles, several laser treatment sessions will be required. The precise number of treatments varies from person to person, but it may be that 6 or more treatment sessions may be required to gain optimum results.

Most Clients will experience 65-95% reduction in hair growth. Although the results of laser treatment are permanent, some Clients may require occasional “clean-up” sessions to treat individual hairs.

  9. What should I expect after the treatments, and are there any risks involved?

Although Laser Hair Removal is very safe, there are nevertheless some potential side-effects and risks. Understanding these possible side-effects and risks will enable you to make an informed decision. At your consultation our laser specialist will explain to you all aspects of the procedure.

You may see some short-term reactions such as a redness and/or follicular edema (a temporary swelling of the hair root sac, and looks rather like goosebumps).

This will typically subside after a few hours. In rare circumstances, adverse reactions might occur which could include a small blister or temporary skin lightening or darkening.Laser Hair Removal works best and has the fewest risks with pale skin. It does not always work well on red hair or grey hair.

For those with darker complexions, there is the risk of too much laser energy being absorbed, resulting in skin damage. However the technology within our Nd:Yag laser enables us to control the level of energy absorption, thus making it also suitable for treating darker skin types with reduced likelihood of adverse side-effects.

Laser Hair Removal treatment should be avoided if you are particularly sensitive to light or have any infection in the region of the treatment area.

You should avoid Laser Hair Removal treatment if you have been treated for acne using Isotretinoin during the foregoing 12 month period.

Most people can get treated during their lunch time and there will be no visible indications of a treatment when they return to their office.
